Giving Coins as a Gift
Are you stumped as to what to get someone for a gift? Have you thought about coins? Coins are an excellent gift for those of all ages.
Are you going to a baby shower or a birthday party for a baby, toddler or young child? Look how fast kids grow. What you would normally get them will only be a short term gift. Coins last a lifetime. Why not get them a proof set
Something I wish I had done when my grandpa was alive was either show him the internet or at least I should have purchased him an unsearched roll of coins. Unsearched rolls of coins, also known as shotgun rolls, offer excitement in coin collecting. What you get is in the roll of coins is unknown until you crack it open.
You could get lucky and find a rare valuable coin or you can find coins that will fill the open slots in your coin book. That's what I did. After my grandfather died, I received his unfinished book of Flying Eagle and Indian Head cents. I decided I would do my best to complete this book for him.
One of the best things I did was purchase an unsearched roll of Indian Head cents. From one roll, I filled in at least seven empty slots and replaced four worn pennies with coins from the shotgun roll that are in much better condition. I can see the smile on grandpa's face knowing that I picked up his hobby and I am finishing his book. Just wish I could share it with him.
A few coin buying tips:
Don't overspend if you know nothing about coins.
If your father or grandfather is a collector, ask questions about what he needs or would like to add to his collection. If he leaves his coin books accessible, take a peak and see which one is lacking and has open spots. Then search Start Collectibles for an unsearched roll of the type of coin he needs.
For example:
If he has a book of Buffalo nickels that need filled, go to the Buffalo nickels page of Star Collectibles and at the top of the page, enter the term "unsearched".
Good Luck and have fun. Who knows! You may become interested in coin collecting. It can be addictive.
